Job Description

Director of Staff Development and Infection Preventionist

Excellent Leadership position at a fantastic facility located near Los Angeles, California.

Director of Staff Development (DSD)/Infection Preventionist (IP), is responsible for planning, conducting and coordinating educational programs for the development and improvement of necessary skills and knowledge for all Skilled Nursing Facility staff. The DSD/IP ensures orientation, certification and in-service programs are conducted according to facility policy and procedure and in compliance with state and federal regulations. The DSD/IP will conduct in-services as mandated by state and federal regulations and that address the needs of the facility as determined by the facility’s Quality Improvement Program, through completion of clinical rounds as identified by the Director of Nursing or designee, or as identified during a Licensing and Certification visit. The DSD/IP is accountable to the Director of Nursing.

Duties and Responsibilities:

• Schedule, plan and implement appropriate orientation of new employees  

• Participate in assessing educational needs of all CNAs in the SNF and coordinates needed in-services with individual managers to meet the requirements of the CNA program to support competencies and improve performance in identified areas to maintain patient quality

• Participate in assessing educational needs of all clinical and non-clinical staff in the SNF and coordinate needed in-services with individual managers to meet the requirements to support the competencies and knowledge of all staff to improve performance in identified areas to maintain patient quality, regulatory compliance, or performance improvement

• Prepare monthly calendar of planned in-services and post at least one week prior to the first of each month. These in-services must include sufficient in-service classes for CNAs in the SNF to attend those classes required by federal and/or state regulations

• Present scheduled in-service education programs from approved lesson plans and materials

• Supervise/observe CNAs in the SNF and makes skills evaluations for competency and positive regard for residents

• Maintain appropriate records documenting attendance at orientation and in-service classes for all staff in the SNF

• Interview prospective CNA applicants and coordinates hiring needs with the Director of Nursing  

• Establish a mechanism and maintains a tracking system to document staff receipt of information covered in education classes and/or in-services not attended by staff and establish a mechanism to deliver missed education classes and/or in-services to identified staff as needed  

• Implement and review the facility’s infection prevention program

Infection Prevention Duties and Responsibilities:

• Participate in staff meetings to provide and obtain information regarding the effectiveness of education programs. Re-evaluate educational programs based on data obtained through ongoing staff meetings

• Teach within a formal or informal structure as necessary to meet educational goals

• Initiate and assist with the implementation of change to meet the needs of patients, staff, physicians, and the SNF. Update policies, procedures and processes as needed

• Communicates with medical staff, nursing department and staff of other departments

• Collects infection data from all departments and reviews facility Antibiogram for trends

• Maintains records for each case of healthcare associated infections

• Conducts outbreak investigation

• Investigates incidents of infections and reports such incidents to the appropriate person/department

• Ensures availability of supplies required for infection prevention

• Conducts surveillance of infection; coordinates with contracted lab to identify opportunities  

• Ensures the completion of audits regarding the implementation of and compliance with selected policies

• Presents infection prevention monthly, quarterly, and annual report to the IPC, Quality Assurance Committee, Medical Director, Department Managers, and other persons as applicable; the reports may include results of infection prevention program, trends, type of infections, and matters of concern

LICENSURE OR CERTIFICATION:

1. Maintains a current California Registered Nurse license or Licensed Vocational Nurse license

2. Certification in Infection Control and Prevention, including training and certification as an Infection Preventionist

Required Qualifications:

  • Current and Unencumbered State Nursing License
  • At least 3 Years of Previous Experience
  • Current BLS Certification Required
